Easy Apple Galette Recipe

With a buttery crumbly crust and the sweet-tart apple filling in the middle, this is surely one of the best apple desserts out there. This rustic, melt-in-your-mouth galette recipe is very easy to make and you can also use this dough to make any kind of fruit galettes.

This French pastry is one of my go-to recipes for desserts. The literal translation of galette is flat cake. Though it’s quite similar to a pie, galettes are free-form, round, and flat pastries that can be prepared with a savory or sweet filling. The variations are endless! I once read somewhere that said a galette is like a humble and free-spirited cousin of pie. This recipe doesn’t require a lot of “fancy” ingredients or techniques and is beginner-friendly. Can be served in many ways. With sweet vanilla ice cream, or powdered sugar dusted on top, and some drizzle of caramel, maybe with whipped cream, or perfect on its own. So let’s get baking!

Ingredients:

Ingredients for the dough:

  1. Flour: All-purpose flour or refined flour
  2. Butter: Unsalted cold butter
  3. Salt: Table salt
  4. Water: Ice cold water

Ingredients for the filling:

  1. Apple: Any kind of fresh and good quality apple can be used.
  2. Sugar: Powdered/confectioners sugar.
  3. Cinnamon powder
  4. Ginger powder
  5. Lemon juice: Fresh/storebought

How to Make Apple Galette

How to make the dough:

Step 1: In a bowl, sift in and whisk the flour and salt.

Step 2: Cut the chilled butter into small pieces. Add them to the flour and salt mixture.

Step 3: Use a fork or food processor to incorporate the butter to form crumbles.

Step 4: Add the cold water and mix until well incorporated.

Step 5: Divide the crust dough into small portions and give them a round shape.

Step 6: Wrap the galette dough balls with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 40 minutes.

While the dough is resting, let’s start making the apple filling.

How to make the filling:

Step 1: Peel and slice an apple into thin pieces.

Step 2: Mix the thinly sliced apples with powdered sugar, cinnamon and ginger powder, lemon juice, and salt.

Step 3: In a pan add butter and once it melts completely, add the seasoned apple slices. Let it simmer on medium-low heat. Once it sizzles up and the apples have softened, turn the heat off.

How to make apple galettes:

Step 1: Take out any one of the wrapped dough. Take it out of the wrap and place it on a floured surface, and roll out the chilled dough.

Step 2: Add a good amount of the filling to the center of the rolled dough.

Step 3: Fold a small part of the border dough over the side of the apple filling.

Step 4: Now, fold another small part adjacent to the first one.

Step 5: Continue to fold the border dough until the filling’s border is covered nicely.

Step 6: Beat an egg and brush it on the crust of the galette. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius and bake the galettes for 20 minutes.

Now, these galettes are ready to be served.

Yield: 9 8 cm or 4 13 cm
