As a kid, I’ve always been curious about how the stuffing goes inside of a bun, dumpling, etc. They looked so perfect on the outside that I was convinced that maybe it was done with some kind of special utensil. Secret technique? and the silliest one, magic? haha.

Though my imagination as a 6-year-old was far off from reality, stuffed buns will always be magical because of how delicious they are and the variations they come in. Almost like little tasty bundles of surprises.

This recipe can be a bit time-consuming because of resting and proofing the dough but it’s super easy to follow and definitely worth the try.

Ingredients for the dough:

  • All-purpose flour
  • Luke-warm milk
  • Egg
  • Yeast
  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Butter
  • Sesame seeds or oregano or herbs of your choice
  • Powdered milk

  • Chopped chicken – boneless
  • Chopped onion
  • Minced garlic
  • Salt
  • Spices
  • Oil

Prepare the Ingredients for the Dough

Step 1: In a small bowl or cup, add yeast and sugar to lukewarm milk. Mix them nicely and keep them aside for now.

Step 2: Take another bowl and add flour to it. Add powdered milk, and salt to the flour as well. Mix the dry ingredients nicely.

Step 3: Crack and add the egg to the dry ingredients.

Step 4: Add the yeast-milk mixture to the flour as well. Mix all ingredients together.

Step 5: Once all the ingredients are well mixed, start kneading the dough by hand. The dough texture will be sticky at first, but the sticky texture will reduce as you continue kneading. Add a little bit of flour if needed but avoid adding too much.

Once the dough is smooth and not sticky anymore, form a ball shape with the dough. Place the dough in a bowl, brush the dough with oil, and rest it for an hour.

Step 6: Let’s prepare the filling now. Gather and prepare all the ingredients.

Step 7: In a small pan add oil and heat it on low-medium flake. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to it. 

Step 8: Once the onion is sautéed, add the chopped chicken pieces to the pan. Add all the spices as well.

Step 9: Stir fry until the chicken is light brown and nicely cooked. Add a little bit of water if necessary to cook the chicken.

How to Stuff the Dough and Prepare it for Baking

Step 10: Take the dough out and divide it into several small even parts. Then take one of those small sections and form it into a ball shape as shown in the picture.

Step 11: Now gently flatten the dough using your hand or a rolling pin and add an adequate amount of filling depending on the size of the dough.

Step 12: Bring the outer edge of the flattened dough ball to the center (over the filling) and pinch it together in the center to secure the filling. Make sure that the filling is completely covered with dough.

Step 13: Place them on a baking tray (Lined with parchment paper or buttered and floured). the sealed side of the bun should be facing the tray. Cover them with a kitchen towel and rest for another 30 minute in a warm place. You can preheat the oven to 160-170 degrees Fahrenheit and place it there.

Step 14: Now brush the buns with butter and sprinkle some sesame seeds on top. And bake them in 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 20-25 min.

  3. Flatten the dough ball on a rolling board using your hand or a rolling pin.
  4. Add an adequate amount o chicken in the middle.
  5. Bring the outer edge of the flattened dough ball to the center (over the filling) and pinch it together to close. Make sure that the filling is completely covered.
  6. Put the buns on a baking tray lined with parchment paper And rest them in a warm place for 30 min. You can preheat the oven in 160-170 degree Fahrenheit and place the buns there.
  7. Brush he buns with butter and sprinkle some sesame seeds on top.
  8. Bake them for 20-25 min in 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
